Speaker Martin to Resign: BBC News.

Michael Martin is understood to be preparing to announce he will stand down as Commons Speaker.

STV reported that he will make the announcement to MPs at 1430 BST – but the report has not been confirmed.
Mr Martin has been criticised over his handling of the furore over MPs’ expenses and a motion of no confidence in him has been backed by 23 MPs.
It would be the first time in more than 300 years that a Commons Speaker has been effectively forced out.
On Monday he apologised but did not give any indication that he was preparing to stand down.

I hope those who signed the motion, like David Davis, also step down and allow a by-election to decide their hypocritical fate.

I think that it is interesting that some of the most vocal supporters of Speaker Martin like him have dipped their greasy fingers into the public purse, he has also been an obstacle to reform and wished to keep MPs allowances exempt from the Freedom of Information Act. It is up to the members of the house to decide who should be the Speaker. I would agree that there are number of MPs who have abused their allowances and should follow him now by resigning.
