Speaker Martin Will He GO?

There is a great deal of criticism of Speaker Martin. Well it’s not the easiest job in the political world having sometimes to handle  646 MPs who can and do get very noisy on certain occasions, though most of the time the House of Commons chamber is empty.  The problem is that his handling of the MPs’ expenses crisis has been  inept, his rude comments to several MPs in the House recently and it seems also he had a reluctance to allow the general public to know the expenses of MPs – he didn’t like the Freedom of Information Act.

I heard a rather irate Jim Sheridan MP Paisley & Renfrewshire North making some attempt to defend Speaker Martin on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme this morning.

BBC RADIO 4 TODAY PROGRAMME: “Speaker Michael Martin is due to make a statement in the House of Commons. He is facing pressure to stand down after Nick Clegg broke with parliamentary convention by calling for him to go. Political editor Nick Robinson, Vernon Bogdanor, Professor of Government at Oxford University and Jim Sheridan MP discuss the speaker’s precarious position.”

The mood in the House seems to be building for him to go and it is clear a great many would want him to go now not later.
