International Crisis Group Wrong on Zimbabwean Solution.

Now I have a lot of respect for the work done by the International Crisis Group, it has played a useful role in researching, reporting on events in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in Africa. But I fear there latest proposal for a solution in Zimbabwe is evidence they have lost the plot. Francois Grignon the Director of the Group’s Afrcia programme has proposed that Robert Mugabe stand down, what does Francis think everyone has been trying to do for years, and that Morgan Tsvangirai step aside so that others can agree a unity government a transitional government to move the country forward.

This cannot and will not work, it betrays a failure to understand the nature of the problem and that is the complete dominance of Mugabe and the CIO, Zanu PF politburo, the generals and police commanders. The problem is Mugabe won’t stand aside unless forced and neither is he allowed to do so. Now in regard to the MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, we often feel exasperated by bad decisions made by him but he is nevertheless a people’s hero: he is the personification of change.

I think someone at the International Crisis group should rethink this proposed solution as it is dreaming not dealing with reality. Mugabe and Zanu PF rule must go yes, but they have to be forced out all other methods have failed.
