Italian prime minister seeks €1m from La Repubblica and may sue British publications over sex scandal reports

* John Hooper in Rome guardian.co.uk, Friday 28 August 2009 18.37 BST

“Italy’s prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, today launched an all-out attack on Italian and international media which have reported his involvement in sex scandals and questioned its implications.

His lawyer said he had served writs on newspapers and magazines in at least two other European countries and was taking advice on the scope for libel actions in Britain. In Italy Berlusconi is seeking damages of €1m from the Espresso group, whose flagship daily, La Repubblica, has spearheaded the campaign to get answers about his friendship with an aspiring teenage actress and his alleged involvement with self-acknowledged prostitutes…”

Who Do You Think You Are?

Who Do You Think You Are?

The production team behind the BBC popular programme “Who Do You Think You Are? have without doubt struck a cord amongst many British families. I am a little puzzled at the use of “celebrities” and it might appear that the production team is scraping the barrel looking for suitable “celebrities” – certainly with the current series I fail to recognize any of these “celebrities”, they seem to me unknowns and not “celebrities”. That’s not to say their family histories are not interesting – in some cases they are. Most people do not have remarkable people in their family trees and the disappointment in not airing Michael Parkinson’s family history because it was “boring” might serve to put people off.

The other remarkable thing about these programmes is how local officialdom in all its forms falls over backwards in assisting these “celebrities” . In reality this is misleading, too many people this just doesn’t happen. I have met very helpful archivists and staff: I have also seem lazy staff and appalling record keeping and dumb staff who have just no idea about what resources they have.

Overall, the series so far has helped many to think about researching their family tree and there is no doubt it can be a very rewarding experience. But I think those in the production team should get a little more real – their task is to encourage people to research their family tree whether or not they might have heroes or anti-heroes. In the end we have our own idea of who are our heroes in our family history.

Mike Perham, a 17 year old, from Hertfordshire is near to complete his record breaking sailing around the world. Here is a courageous and determined young man who has achieved something momentous. He is a positive role model for youth. Whilst our media becomes obsessed with youth delinquency and focuses on many of the wasted lives of those who sadly hang around street corners – bored – here we have a young man who should now be on the front pages of our national press. The link below is to his web site:

On 18th November 2008, 16-year-old Mike Perham set out to become the youngest person to sail around the world single-handed in his yacht, TotallyMoney.com. Mike is now just weeks from realising his dream, but the journey has been incredibly difficult and he still has to cross the Atlantic Ocean: tough challenges lie ahead.

Sadly this morning we have heard of the death of a great US politician. He had been suffering from brain cancer. Below is a link to a report from the Boston Globe.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who carried aloft the torch of a Massachusetts dynasty and championed a liberal ideology during almost a half century in the Senate, but whose personal and political failings may have prevented him from realizing the ultimate prize of the presidency, died Tuesday night at his home in Hyannis Port. He was 77 and had been battling brain cancer.

Andrew Strauss and his team played well despite anxious moments. Ricky Ponting’s team seemed to be in a hopeless position but made significant runs. A good day’s cricket.

For goodness sake why didn’t Strauss put in his best bowlers to attack – Flintoff has become a waste of space and Harmison has lost it! At this rate the Aussies will retain the Ashes!

FBI Chief Condemns MacAskill’s Release of the terrorist Megrahi

August 22, 2009 zebrambizi Leave a comment

The BBC have published a letter to the Scottish Minister Kenny MacAskill in regard to his release of the Libyan terrorist Megrahi.

Dear Mr. Secretary:

Over the years I have been a prosecutor, and recently as the Director of the FBI, I have made it a practice not to comment on the actions of other prosecutors, since only the prosecutor handling the case has all the facts and the law before him in reaching the appropriate decision.

Your decision to release Megrahi causes me to abandon that practice in this case. I do so because I am familiar with the facts, and the law, having been the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the investigation and indictment of Megrahi in 1991.

And I do so because I am outraged at your decision, blithely defended on the grounds of “compassion.”

Your action in releasing Megrahi is as inexplicable as it is detrimental to the cause of justice. Indeed your action makes a mockery of the rule of law.

Your action gives comfort to terrorists around the world who now believe that regardless of the quality of the investigation, the conviction by jury after the defendant is given all due process, and sentence appropriate to the crime, the terrorist will be freed by one man’s exercise of “compassion.”

Your action rewards a terrorist even though he never admitted to his role in this act of mass murder and even though neither he nor the government of Libya ever disclosed the names and roles of others who were responsible.

Your action makes a mockery of the emotions, passions and pathos of all those affected by the Lockerbie tragedy: the medical personnel who first faced the horror of 270 bodies strewn in the fields around Lockerbie, and in the town of Lockerbie itself; the hundreds of volunteers who walked the fields of Lockerbie to retrieve any piece of debris related to the breakup of the plane; the hundreds of FBI agents and Scottish police who undertook an unprecedented global investigation to identify those responsible; the prosecutors who worked for years – in some cases a full career – to see justice done.

But most importantly, your action makes a mockery of the grief of the families who lost their own on December 21, 1988.

You could not have spent much time with the families, certainly not as much time as others involved in the investigation and prosecution.

You could not have visited the small wooden warehouse where the personal items of those who perished were gathered for identification – the single sneaker belonging to a teenager; the Syracuse sweatshirt never again to be worn by a college student returning home for the holidays; the toys in a suitcase of a businessman looking forward to spending Christmas with his wife and children.

You apparently made this decision without regard to the views of your partners in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the Lockerbie tragedy.

Although the FBI and Scottish police, and prosecutors in both countries, worked exceptionally closely to hold those responsible accountable, you never once sought our opinion, preferring to keep your own counsel and hiding behind opaque references to “the need for compassion.”

You have given the family members of those who died continued grief and frustration. You have given those who sought to assure that the persons responsible would be held accountable the back of your hand.

You have given Megrahi a “jubilant welcome” in Tripoli, according to the reporting. Where, I ask, is the justice?

Sincerely yours,

Robert S. Mueller, III

Director

England have now declared 373 for 9. Australia needs to gain 546 runs to win and given the quality of some of their batsmen quite possible. So England’s bowling needs to really hammer home and go for quick wickets!

Australia now begins its crucial 2nd innings.
