Obama hails Apollo 11 astronauts
I recall the excitement of 20 July 1969; the success of the Apollo project that began with the landing of two of the Apollo 11 crew on the surface of the Moon was a significant scientific achievement. Neil Armstrong and his colleagues, his fellow astronauts are right all efforts should now focuas on a permament colony on Mars. The establishment of a scientific community on Mars would be expensive but it would be in itself a vital next step. We need to keep up bold new goals in space exploration. I hope that President Obama will approve extra funding to NASA for this goal.
Marking the 40th anniversary of the event, he said Americans continued to draw inspiration from Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.
“I think that all of us recall the moment in which mankind finally was untethered from this planet,” he added…”
Earlier, Mr Aldrin and Mr Collins called for renewed efforts to send a manned mission to Mars.
