Polish anti-Marxist thinker dies

Leszek Kolakowski has died, he did so much to expose Marxism as a failure, a false ideology which enabled oppressive dictatorships. I remember reading his books they played a major role in helping me to de-Marx myself.

Adam Easton, BBC News, Warsaw : “The Polish philosopher and historian of ideas, Leszek Kolakowski has died in hospital in Oxford, England. He was 81.One of the few 20th Century eastern European thinkers to gain international renown, he spent almost half of his life in exile from his native country. He argued that the cruelties of Stalinism were not an aberration, but the logical conclusion of Marxism.MPs in Warsaw observed a minute’s silence to remember his contribution to a free and democratic Poland…”more

Superb England dominate Australia: 2nd Test Ashes: BBC SPORT – Cricket

Astonishing and superb play from England team today.

Oliver Brett, BBC SPORT: “James Anderson took four wickets as England seized control of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s with a tremendous bowling display late on the second day.

Replying to England’s 425, Australia recovered from a poor start which saw them slip to 10-2 and soon after tea had reached a solid position of 103-2.

But an outstanding running catch by Stuart Broad at fine leg to end Simon Katich’s innings on 48 triggered a collapse in which the Aussies crashed to 152-8, losing six wickets for 49 in 15 overs – a passage of play that will live long in the memories of those who witnessed it.

At stumps, with bad light having finally suspended Australia’s agonising slump, Australia were still 269 runs behind on 156-8, and needing another 70 to avoid the follow-on.

With a five-man bowling attack at his disposal captain Andrew Strauss will be tempted to impose the follow-on should he have the option to do so on Saturday…”more

Troops need more, says Army head

July 17, 2009 zebrambizi Leave a comment

It is now clear that our Labour government and the beancounters have let our troops down; despite all that spin General Sir Richard Dannatt has made it clear more equipment is needed and he is handing in a shopping list. But the question arises, Operation Panther’s Claw must surely have taken some planning well ahead of the start of operations, how come it has taken so long for these issues to be aired? Is the Labour government entirely at fault? Does the blame really centre on the inner machine of the MOD and its bureaucrats, senior civil servants of the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury? How far did the beancounters succeed in restricting requests from the military chiefs for troops and equipment? Whatever has happened it is a disgrace. If the government commits our forces to war it has a duty to provide them with the equipment they need to do the job not eleven months after the commencement of operations.

The Ashes: England captain Andrew Strauss labels his 161 Ashes knock as career best – Telegraph

Andrew Strauss played good cricket yesterday, perhaps one of his best days so far. It’s a great pity that the rest of the team so far hasn’t matched his skills. The problem is that Australia has plenty of batsmen who can do the same so unless there is more skillful play from the remaining batsmen the tide could easily turn in Australia’s favour:

Simon Briggs in THE TELEGRAPH: “Another 17 runs on Friday would take Andrew Strauss into uncharted territory, making this the highest Test score of his five-year career. But no matter what number ends up on the scorecard, Strauss acknowledged that his unbeaten 161 represents a new pinnacle of achievement…”more
