BBC purges jobs.

October 17, 2007

So the BBC boss, Mark Thompson, in his strange wisdom is going to fire thousands of staff whilst maintaining the incomes of a few overpaid celebrities. The quality of news and current affairs reporting already in decline will face further budget cuts. John Humphrys and Jeremy Paxman have been in the forefront of bitter criticism of the budget cuts and the lowering of standards. BBC staff will be taking strike action, but we feel strikes never solve anything. There is no doubt that the quality service once provided by the BBC went down the tubes long ago. All that matters now is continued pampering of celebrities and TV programmes based on the lowest common denominator. Drama specials such as the excellent Bleak House are slowly giving way to drama based on intimate love scenes designed for TV ratings. Some BBC web sites appear to be pointless. BBC Three and Four are disappointing, there are too many pop music radio stations. One hopes that even at this late stage the BBC Trust might have second thoughts or that government intervention to persuade Mark Thompson not to go ahead with such budget cuts.
