The Royal Mail.

October 12, 2007

We value the services provided by the Royal Mail; its staff play an important role in our lives; we all use the postal services; we all need, the general public that is, the postal services. The postman is always a welcome sight, he has become part of everyday life. It is a vital service for many: the elderly, the sick, those seeking jobs, those who keep in touch with friends and relatives. The Internet cannot replace the everyday services of postal staff and the privately run parcel and courier services cannot deliver items door to door. There is an agrument for copying European practices and providing post boxes in streets and flats to reduce what is a labour intensive industry.

We are appalled that the CWU believes punishing the general public is a way to resolve its dispute with the management of the Royal Mail. We are likewise appalled at the casual and dreaful handling of the current crisis by Royal Mail senior management, these people just as with the CWU care little about the general public.

Both parties should make an effort to resolve this dispute and if government intervention can help then now is the time to intervene, and bang a few heads together to resolve this dispute. The CWU having made its point, should now, suspend strike activity and be ready to compromise because in the end that will happen in any case.
