General Election?

October 4, 2007

Up to now, we have been in favour of having a general election now, certainly opinion polls are very favourable to the Prime Minister. It is clearly a difficult decision to make. The darker evenings do make campaigning difficult as the evenings get colder and telephone calls are more often than not greeted by disinterest or call barring. Clearly, the situation is in the Labour Party’s favour and the Tories are not prepared, even though their leader thinks they are. The calling of an election now would be a brave gamble - Labour may well achieve victory and its first fourth term government. Above all, it would clear the air, sanction the change of prime minister and give the government a firm base for the next four years.

We need to see a bold Labour radical programme, perhaps including fixed terms for parliamentary elections should be on the agenda.
