Clearly, the political sitiuation in Zimbabwe remains uncertain. The two day stay-away led by the ZCTU did not bring with the expected support it should have had. for many Zimbabweans the realities of the economic meltdown are too severe and so many don’t feel they cannot openly campaign. Mugabe’s police thugs were out in force intimidating people whilst the beatings and terror against opposition activists continues. If anything the stay-away confirmed Mugabe’s fear of the people, that he and his associates cannot survive without employing brute terror.
Mbeki’s role in the coming period will be interesting but no more, he is unlikely to be involved in real change, he clearly still does not understand why Mugabe and Zanu pf have become unpopular.
Whilst it is true that only Zimbabweans can in the end change their political and economic fortunes they still need the help of all of us to continue the pressure on Mugabe and his associates. The personal sanctions imposed by the EU and the USA need to be extended and applied seriously. The children of Mugabe and his associates in government and Zanu pf who are studying at colleges in the west need to be expelled now.
In the end we must always continue to hope. We should support any act of resistance to the Mugabe fascist regime.
